The Enterprise was established in 1983 and is governed by Law 1069/80. It is a Legal Entity under Private Law, with a public benefit – non-profit – character. Today, the total staff of D.E.Y.A.H. amounts to 120 employees of various specialisations and high expertise, owing to their many years of experience as well as their training through annual seminars that are implemented.
Its objective regarding Water Supply is the definitive resolution of the city’s water supply problem (by ensuring continuous flow in the networks and the availability of backup solutions), and regarding Sewerage, the coverage of the entire city with networks that will channel wastewater to the Heraklion Biological Treatment Plant.
Its purpose is the study, construction, maintenance, operation, administration and management of water supply and sewerage networks for wastewater and stormwater, as well as wastewater treatment units in the Heraklion area, as defined by Law N.1069/80.

Role and contribution of D.E.Y.A.H. in the FRESHNESS project
Through its participation in the FRESHNESS project, the Municipal Water and Sewerage Enterprise of Heraklion (D.E.Y.A.H.) aims to improve the existing water supply network infrastructure through the exchange of experience and expertise with the other partners involved, and through the implementation of a pilot action focused on the installation of a fixed network AMR system capable of providing real-time accurate qualitative and quantitative data for the purposes of energy and water resource savings and network operation optimisation. The installation of local and portable monitoring stations, in addition to the installation of repeaters and data concentrators for digital water meters, has the ultimate goal of achieving changes in consumer behaviour.
Scientific studies have demonstrated that providing users with real-time information can lead to behavioural changes. Furthermore, trust and data protection are important, as water consumption data is sensitive and personal. In addition, cost-effectiveness is a key consideration for any resource management solution. The implementation of a fixed network supports D.E.Y.A.H.’s mission to provide good quality water 24/7 to citizens, ensuring reliable and sustainable water supply for future generations.
