The primary objective of the FRESHNESS project is the restoration and assurance of conservative water and energy use throughout the entire urban drinking water supply chain. The goal is to enhance the efficiency of water supply systems and ensure the sustainability of natural resources in an environment of escalating challenges, arising from both the climate crisis and energy instability.

Particular emphasis is placed on the critical and interdependent Water-Energy Nexus, which is internationally recognized as a key pillar for improving environmental performance in water distribution networks. In this context, the project focuses on the prevention and rational management of risks associated with the availability and quality of drinking water, stemming from both natural causes and anthropogenic impacts.

The FRESHNESS project aims to develop and implement innovative technological solutions and best practices, covering all stages of the urban water supply system — from the external to the internal aqueduct. The reduction of the energy footprint is achieved either:

  • directly, through the energy upgrading of critical subsystems (e.g., pumping stations, use of inverters, pump operation at the optimal efficiency point),
  • or indirectly, through the reduction of water demand and water losses, which entails lower energy consumption across the entire system.

This holistic approach results in the reduction of energy consumed:

  • in the pumping and transport of water
  • in its treatment and purification at water treatment facilities
  • in its distribution to consumers, and finally
  • in the drainage and treatment of wastewater.

The project is integrated into the INTERREG VI-A Cooperation Programme “Greece-Cyprus 2021-2027”, specifically under Priority 1: A greener, low-carbon Europe, and Specific Objective S.O. 2.1 – Promoting energy efficiency measures and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
